Changes- During the 1920's women role in society had a dramatic change. The 19th amendment was passed which gave the women the right to vote along side the men in the society. Women could also have a career with taking care of the house hold as well. Women were also allowed to smoke, drink, and dance. A symbol of the 1920's were flappers. Flappers were women who had short bobbed cut hair and dressed way more provacitivly than most women. Their wardrobe was very provocative, they used step-ins instead of corsets. Coco Chanel was popular for flappers. The clothes were made to fit them tightly. The attitude of a flapper was young, fast living, and very reckless. Though not all women in the 1920's were like theses women.
Prohibition- Prohibition was when the 18th amendment made it a illegal to make and sale "intoxicating liquors". Drinks couldn't have more then 0.5% alcohol in them. The Volstead Act shut down every bar and saloon in the US January 16, 1920. This act caused people to go to a illegal speakeasies, which were underground bars, instead of normal bars. These underground bars and liquor trades we're run by organized crime figures, racketeers, and bootleggers. Drinking was seen as a bad symbol that represented the city. People had hoped that prohibition would make the city better. Later on the 21st amendment repealed Prohibition.
Economy- During this time the economy was very good. People had a lot of extra money. From 1920 1929 the economy more than doubled. Because of the economy increase it became a "consumer society". Instead of making their own clothes they had money to buy premade clothes. Along with home appliances such as vacuums, refrigerators, ect. People also went to theaters to watch moving pictures. The most important invention though was the automobile. Since the economy was good it may automobiles very affordable. The automobile became a necessity.
Presidents- The president who won the 1920 election was Warren G. Hardening. He was the 29th president, he made a promise of "returning to normalcy". Hardening was only three years into his term when he had a heart attack. That he die from. Calvin Coolidge became president after his death. Coolidge what is the 30th President. He was in office from 1923-1929. The presidents were Republicans.
